Our Story

In January 2022, King’s Cross launched a competition to transform a vacant premises in King’s Cross into a vibrant community space. The competition attracted 53 entries from local individuals, charities, social enterprises, and organisations. On 17 November 2022, King’s Cross (KCCLP) announced FishTank, a youth entrepreneurship social enterprise, as the winner of the competition FishTank was selected from In partnership with New London Architecture (NLA), FishTank called for ideas and proposals on how the two-storey building could be transformed into a community offering that would benefit local residents.

FishTank was founded in 2019 by Stephen Griffith to offer training, mentoring, office space, networking events, content creation facilities, and support to young entrepreneurs. It has since worked with more than 70 young people, helping them turn their ideas into success stories.

FishTank Workshop, focusing on art and the creative industries, is the latest stage in FishTank’s development. FishTank, Central Saint Martins, Copenhagen Youth Project (CYP) and local residents came together to discuss and plan a proposal for the building on Beaconsfield Street. The workshops took place at our spaces within the Havas building and at the Architecture department in CSM. We have built strong connections with CSM and other institutions within the Knowledge Quarter which will be further developed over time and through the FishTank Workshop programme.

FishTank Workshop will use the 1,200 sq. ft. building to expand its offerings for young people, particularly those who have yet to fully benefit from the ongoing transformation of King’s Cross and its creative opportunities. The ground floor will be a working gallery, exhibiting the work and ideas of FishTank’s young artists and entrepreneurs, fostering collaboration with creative corporations based on the estate. The first floor will feature a content creation space and editing suite, as well as an open workshop and collaboration area. The space will host a rotating roster of resident artists and creatives who will work from the FishTank premises, offering coaching and skill-sharing opportunities to young people who visit. FishTank plans to build on its connections with King’s Cross’s stakeholders and businesses to develop its program further and expand its reach.
